The relationship between Egypt and China dates back to ancient times. During the past few the decades, the partnership has evolved materially with a notable progress in various economic and political areas.

In 1999, National Bank of Egypt (hereinafter referred to as NBE) established a representative office in Shanghai, which was taken against the backdrop of increasingly frequent commercial exchanges between China and Egypt. Ten years later, in 2008, NBE Shanghai Representative Office was upgraded to a branch, which was not only an important step in NBE's internationalization strategy, but also a milestone event in the development of Arab banking industry in China. The NBE Shanghai Branch is a landmark financial institution. It is the first bank among Arab countries to establish a branch in China, marking a new level of cooperation between China and Egypt in the financial field. The establishment of NBE Shanghai Branch not only facilitates commercial exchanges between China and Egypt, but also provides important financial support for promoting trade between China and the Middle East and North Africa region.

2017 was also an important milestone for the NBE Shanghai Branch, as we received approval from National Financial Supervisory Authority to handle CNY banking business. The acquisition of this license not only consolidated the position of NBE Shanghai Branch as a key promoter of trade activities between China and Egypt, but also made NBE Shanghai Branch play a more important role in China's "the Belt and Road" initiative.
